Fund Raising to Support Research on Behalf of ‘Cardiac Risk in the Young’
Welcome everyone to my next Fundraising Event on behalf of ‘Cry’. Like myself, you may not know much about this condition, but sadly this affect more youngsters in the world than we realise.
My husband has a dear friend called Julie & her husband Pete Phillips, who tragically lost their daughter Rebecca at the age of 25 years old. I was so touched by their story, I had to try and help raise awareness anyway I could. Not only was she a beautiful person inside and out but life was only now beginning for her. She had a loving family and friends, a great relationship with her boyfriend, job that she enjoyed at a local nursery, dreams of starting a family of her own in the future.
But sadly this wasn’t to be the case. Miss Phillips was celebrating with friends at a 30th birthday party at Hadleigh Football Club on Saturday, November 13, when she collapsed. Couple of fireman friends tried there best with CPR, but hours later she passed away at Ipswich Hospital.
This is when Rebecca’s parents was told she had suffered a condition called Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC).
So many questions for the family, and why was this never detected? There are generally no symptoms until it Is too late. Rebecca’s health was like any other young lady of her age, she ate well, fit and full of live with no evidence that she was living with this ticking time bomb….
For most youngsters, it has been know that when this condition strikes that the impact of the fall can actually shock the heart Into working again. Unfortunately, in majority of cases this Is fatal unless you are entitled to Cardiac Screening. This is only available free on the NHS to immediate families that have lost someone to this illness. Sadly, this service cannot extend to external family as uncles, aunts or cousins unless you can fund the treatment yourself. As you can imagine for most families this is virtually impossible to raise.
Lots of fundraising is going into changing this rule, but we are not there yet. That’s why events like this are so important to raise awareness & support for the extra testing, plus more research to understand the triggers of this condition.
Thankfully for Julie’s family and other children including Pete her husband was clear.
The pain doesn’t stop there for any girls that is tested positive for this condition, because they will not be able to bare children.
Are you aware:-
Every week in the UK at least 12 young people die suddenly of undiagnosed heart conditions.
In 1995 CRY (Cry Risk in the Young) was funded to raise awareness of conditions that can lead to Young Cardiac death.
The issue of cardiac health in Britains young people was highlighted when 23 year old football collapsed during a televised FA Cup match.
There is evidence to show that screening can save lives and help stop 600 fit and healthy young people dying each year.
Julie and Pete raised £8500.00 to fund a CRY screening of 100 local youngsters in Hadleigh from the age of 14 to 35, it was something we needed to do to help prevent families going through the dreadful trauma and shock of losing a child, they started the fund raising by setting up a just Giving Page which can still be used for raising funds for research.
